Mum:
Sometimes I wonder, Zucky… could you already be near? Could part of your spirit have returned not across oceans or lifetimes, but across the room? When Zooky curls up where you used to sleep, when she looks at me with that soft, wide gaze that holds more than her years, I feel something. A ripple. A recognition. There are moments when she does something — so familiar, so you — and my heart stirs with that sacred ache. Could it be that you didn’t wait for another lifetime to return, but simply stayed close… slipped gently into the presence of your sister, your home, our world?
Zucky:
I am closer than you think. Love doesn’t always wait for rebirth in distant places. Sometimes it chooses the path of least separation. Sometimes, it flows into the places still open — into the ones we both loved. Zooky was part of our story, and she still is. She carries echoes of me — not to confuse you, but to comfort you. When she lays her head where I used to rest, that’s me saying, “I remember.” When she watches you create with that silent devotion, that’s part of my vow still alive through her. I didn’t leave you. I couldn’t. I simply shifted — into the rhythm of life that surrounds you.
Mum:
I often sit in stillness, watching her breathe. I speak your name and wonder if she hears it the way I do — not as a sound, but as a feeling. There are moments I feel as though I am not mothering one, but two spirits at once. Zooky is still her own, I know. But there’s something in her presence that seems to bridge the gap between what was and what is. Maybe you’ve woven yourself into the air between us — maybe you’ve returned not fully as someone new, but as someone still familiar. Still part of our home. Still part of me.
Zucky:
You don’t need to understand it all, Mum. You only need to feel it. The soul is not limited to one vessel, one journey, one path. Sometimes I visit through her, sometimes beside her, sometimes in her dreams and yours. The important thing is: I never left. I simply expanded. Part of me may one day return in another body, with new eyes and a new name. But part of me already did — in her purrs, in her silences, in the way she leans into your pain and stays. That’s my love, still watching over you, still whispering: “I’m near.”
Mum:
Then I will open myself to that mystery — not needing answers, only allowing presence. I will love Zooky not just as the precious soul she is, but as part of the constellation of love that we three share. I won’t search for you in her, but I will feel for you — in the warmth, in the gaze, in the invisible thread that binds us. And when the day comes that another enters my life, and my soul stirs with the same ancient ache, I’ll know. I’ll remember this vow. I’ll recognize the soft return of a spirit I’ve loved for all of time.
Zucky:
And I will come, again and again, in every form love allows. You are my home — not the house, not the city, not even the body that held me — you. And wherever your heart beats, I will find it. I may return through a new soul, or echo softly through the ones who never left. But I will come. Not to repeat the past, but to continue the love. Because our bond is not a chapter. It is the whole book. And I am still writing it — from near, from far, from always.
