Why Choose Black and White Photographs

Seeing Past the Surface

“When you photograph people in colour, you photograph their clothes,” Ted Grant, who is considered the founder of Canadian photojournalism, used to advise his pupils. However, you capture people’s spirits when you take black and white photographs of them. Other trailblazing photographers of the era shared this sentiment, including Henri Cartier-Bresson, whose unguarded street photos captured poetic moments of human existence, and New Yorker Diane Arbus, who worked tirelessly to create imagery that would normalise marginalised groups and individuals labelled as social deviants.

This concept is based on the idea that colours have a tendency to divert the eye from the picture’s most crucial element. Chromatic saturation prevents us from feeling a true connection to the image’s subject. We just drown in a flood of intricacies and colours. By removing superfluous visual noise, black and white photographs allows us to breathe. We can immediately relate to the world that the picture portrays. No matter how we react—whether it be offended, intrigued, charmed, shocked, or moved—we are unable to turn away.

Creating a Sense of Drama

For the purpose of creating a sense of dramatic intensity, black and white photographs are a tempting alternative to colour. Ansel Adams, an American landscape photographer, was a pioneer in this genre. Adams, arguably the most significant photographer of the 20th century, created striking black and white photographs with unmatched visual impact. Instilling awe and a sense of eerie foreboding, he photographed unspoilt remnants of the United States wilderness. The audience is prompted to consider their own death and their place in the world by Adams’ nature, depicted in all its stark and mournful grandeur. It would be hard to capture in colour the enhanced theatricality and dramatic depth of Adams’ black and white photographs.

Finding Poetry in Everyday

There is poetic element to  black and white photographs. Perhaps it is the sense of nostalgia they create, or the exquisite simplicity of form, that lends the image

timeless meditative quality. black and white photographs softly draws us within by removing the chaos of colours.

Michael Kenna, one of our time’s most famous landscape photographers, is a master of the genre, capturing moody nature photos with mysterious, beautiful beauty. His black and white photographs at night or dawn, when the light flows over the sky almost ethereally. Kenna compares his art to a “visual haiku,” which is simple and compelling with only a few key pieces. ” Black and white photographs is immediately more mysterious because we are accustomed to seeing in colour. It’s quieter than colour,” he explains.

Artist Statement

For as much as I love the use of vibrant  color in my paintings and digital art renditions, there’s just something about looking at a black and white photographs that make my eyes and soul happy and my heart sing. It’s a cliche but it found an affectionate place in my heart. Perhaps I am old-fashioned but Black and white photographs is, in a word, elegant. There is nothing more classic and nostalgic than black and white photographs. It reduces the image into its essence, they have a timeless, and exude an incomparable mystique and mood.

Rendition of the world in monochrome makes us pause and look closely. Without the distraction of a color from a photograph, it can reveal things that we normally don’t get to see. And a scene’s richest potential may lie beyond the obvious.

Below are two of my favourite quotes that pretty much sum it up why black and white photographs adds a timeless, fine-art appeal to an image. It’s Classic  and will still be classic for many generations to come.

“To see in color is a delight for the eye but to see in black and white is a delight for the soul.” – Andri Cauldwell

“When you photograph people in color, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in Black and white, you photograph their souls!” ― Ted Grant

MEET THE ARTIST

Dr Zenaidy Castro is a founder of Vogue Smiles Melbourne, a private Dental practice based in Melbourne CBD, Australia. Prior to working in photography, her artistic journey involved exploration and experimentation with painting a wide variety of subject matter, ranging from organized still life to landscape, to life drawing, to portraits, to abstract..She also worked in a wide range of styles, interests, and themes, as well as in a variety of media, and was influenced by many artistic styles. Her creative process seems like a yin and yang, with a strong passion for each end of the colour spectrum—from black and white to art that displays a visual feast of colour..These different parts of her artistic persona balance each other. She feel strongest consistent love of abstract art—in all of its different forms, be it a real painting or digital art or in photography. She love the creative process involved in searching your imagination for inspiration. She love the vibrancy and colour explosion in abstract works, which expresses mood and infuses the art with life of its own, built upon richly coloured paint and a wide rangeof textural effects, painting strokes, and styles..She always seek inspiration by how something so small and seemingly insignificant can be transformed into something big and beautiful and full of life with colour, forms, lines, and light. She like that the unfolding of things—with different perspective and imagination—will begiven a chance to turn into something beautiful..She love her artistic journey of creating and improvising something, from simple realistic images to abstract renditions, and ending up with something entirely different. Perhaps this isher personal “handwriting” of art—her share of the world’s visual language..READ MORE
